On a quiet stretch of the Californian coast I came across the washed-up body of a humpback whale. It had likely died at sea and drifted ashore, its massive body marked by shark bites and already well into decomposition. The sight was striking, not the beauty we often associate with whales but a reminder of the reality of life and death.

For me as a biologist it was a fascinating moment. Despite the strong smell I couldn’t help but take a closer look, trying to read the story this animal carried on its body. Standing beside it I felt both small and humbled by the sheer size of the whale.

Nature is not always pretty, but it reminds us that we are all just a small part of the cycle of life. Human actions are pushing the oceans and wildlife to their limits, and we cannot stand by. We all have a responsibility to act and protect the natural world while we still can.

“We depend on our ocean for the future of life on Earth, and our ocean depends on us to heal the harm we have inflicted on Mother Earth. Let’s join our hearts, hands, and minds to heal her.” – Dr. Jane Goodall
